Only known is that it was from 1996 and at the Liberty Lunch. Might be 1996-06-14 due to internet research Taper's original notes: "I've seen Spoon when they were fantastic and when they were horrible. The first time I saw them, at some shithole dive in Austin at the suggestion of some girl I worked with at the time, maybe this was 1995 or 96, they did a cover of Echos Myron (or something off Bee Thousand). Even though they sounded like a generic band of the era, I gave them the benefit of the doubt for that reason. A couple months later I got their debut album and decided it wasn't half bad, even if it sounded like a Pixies rip-off. Then I saw them at the MAtador Showcase at SXSW, "opening" for GbV, and they were really good. Next time (with John Croslin, in fact) they were atrocious. Next time: great. Time after that? Eh. Footnote: when they played that one really atrocious show they did do a pretty not bad cover of 'Melted Pat.' I recorded that show and, in fact, circulated that one cut to a few folks on PB (the rest of the show was unlistenable). Anyway, I have no idea what happened to that master tape. Anybody on here wind up with that thing? First PM: If it IS the same one, you're right: Liberty Lunch. It might also be the first show John Croslin played with them, as their prev. bass player had recently jumped ship (I think). You're also right about the crowd: very small. If this is my tape, you'll notice lots of bottles clinking in a giant trash barrel, which I made the mistake of standing next to. This was one of only a few shows I taped, using a plain old cassette recorder stuffed down my pants. I had no idea what I was doing. The soundman did a bad job and this, along with the small turnout, put Brit Daniel in a very sour mood. He called off the show maybe halfway through. As we left, my wife remarked how terrible the show was, and when I put the tape in the tape deck of my car and heard the muddy sound she said it wasn't worth keeping. For whatever reason, i didn't listen to her. It was only later that I discovered the 'Melted Pat' cover, which i didn't know at that point. Another note, which might help place a date. The opening act was Abra Moore, formerly of Poi Dog Pondering. Anyway, that's cool that it is still out there. Let me know if it ends up digitized. I think I only sent the entire tape out to three or four people.
